This policy describes the current app and this website. We will update it if their data practices change.
This website
This site counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and does not track you across other sites. It does not include advertising trackers, account registration, or contact forms. Cloudflare hosts the site and processes connection information, such as your IP address and requested pages, to serve and protect it. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
The OpenString app
OpenString works on your device without an account. Microphone audio is processed on your device, in memory. Nothing is recorded or uploaded unless you tap “Send this recording” after a song search or a strum that did not work. That sends that one clip, up to 12 seconds, with your random install id and app version, so we can improve listening. We delete sent clips after 30 days. Songs and preferences stay on your device. To understand feature use, the app sends a random install id, app version, device type and iOS version, plus product interaction events such as app opens, tuner and metronome use, chord views, songs saved, and Detect and onboarding progress. These events contain no song titles, lyrics, names, email addresses, or purchase information. The install id is not tied to your name, email, or purchase.
For certain app events, Cloudflare provides approximate city or country information from the network connection for internal service notifications. The IP address and location are not stored with the app event records. The app does not use advertising or tracking.
When the app reports a crash, it sends Sentry technical diagnostics such as crash details, stack traces, app version, and device and operating-system information. OpenString does not attach your song library, microphone audio, name, or email to these reports. Sentry processes the reports to provide crash reporting; see Sentry’s privacy policy. There is no advertising, and nothing is sold.
When you export a library, OpenString creates a file and opens the system share sheet. You choose where it goes. A cloud storage or sharing service you select handles that copy under its own terms and privacy policy. Import uses the system document picker. OpenString keeps a local recovery copy when you replace a library.
Your choices
You can turn microphone access off in iPhone Settings. You can delete songs in the app. Removing the app removes its local data; exported copies remain wherever you saved them, and device backups are managed through your Apple settings.
